I am an adventure guide and trip organizer, and sometimes I also work as a freelance guide. I truly love the mountains, and I do my work with passion and care. I have been working in mountain tourism for more than 15 years, and I know many parts of the Himalayas very well.

This time, I had a free week, and my kids also had school holidays. So I planned a family trek to Pikey Peak with Doma (My wife), Tenzin (13), Rinzin (11), and Jetsun (11). Usually, we only do short hikes around Kathmandu Valley, so this was their first week-long trek. They were very excited.
We started with a long drive from Kathmandu to Jhapre Village, which took about 11 hours. It was a long journey, but Jhapre is a peaceful and beautiful village at 2920 meters. If you have more time, you can start from Dhap Danda, but we chose Jhapre to save time.

Since I have walked this trail many times, I know the lodges and local people well, which made the trip easier. We spent our first night at Himalayan Lama Hotel in Jhapre. We were the only guests, and it felt very quiet and special.
The next day, after breakfast, we started trekking to Pikey Base Camp (3640m). It took about 7 hours with breaks for tea and lunch. The trail was very beautiful, with colorful rhododendron flowers, grazing yaks, and some wildlife. We also met local children taking care of yaks during their holidays. Our kids enjoyed talking with them and sharing chocolates, it was a happy moment for everyone.

After Samsing Bhanjyang, the trail became more difficult, especially as we walked inside thick clouds. Finally, we reached Pikey Base Camp. The kids saw and touched snow for the first time, they were so happy and excited. Even though they were tired, they quickly ordered tea and snacks. They loved popcorn and played cards near the warm fire. We had dal bhat for dinner and stayed at Sangrila Hotel, which was comfortable and cozy.
The next morning, we planned to start early, but the kids woke up a bit late. So we began our hike to Pikey Peak at 6 am. This was the highlight of the trip. We walked slowly and reached the top in about 1.5 hours. The view was amazing. Even with some clouds, we could see Mount Everest and many other peaks. There was snow on the trail, which made the experience even more special for the kids.

After enjoying the view and taking photos for about an hour, clouds started to cover the mountains. We walked down slowly to Jasmane Bhanjyang for lunch. The trail was steep in some places. After lunch, we continued, first uphill, then a gentle climb, and finally a long downhill walk to Taktor Village. We passed through pine forests and thick mist. It started raining, so we used raincoats, which made walking a bit harder for the kids. Along the way, we saw footprints and poops of wild animals, which made Doma a little nervous.
The trail became slippery due to the rain, and everyone was tired, but we finally reached Taktor Village. We stayed at Green Valley Lodge, a beautiful place surrounded by rhododendron forest. The owners were very kind, and we enjoyed tea and fresh yak milk. I highly recommend this lodge.

The next day, we had a relaxed morning. After breakfast, we walked about 2 hours to Junbesi, a beautiful Sherpa village. We had lunch at Apple Garden Hotel, where the kids happily enjoyed buffalo meat after a few days.
After lunch, we hiked to Thupten Choling Monastery, another highlight of the trip. It took about 1.5 hours. The monastery was peaceful and calm, and we really enjoyed the atmosphere. Later, we walked back to Junbesi.

In the evening, we took a jeep to Phaplu and stayed at a family house, Doma’s brother’s home. They were very happy to see us, and we spent a lovely evening with good food, laughter, and stories.
The next morning, we woke up early and drove back to Kathmandu.
This was our Pikey Peak family trek experienced... In the mountains, every step with family becomes a story to remember.

It is a perfect trek for anyone looking for a short adventure with beautiful mountain views, including Everest. It is also great for families with children. The trek offers a wonderful mix of nature, local culture, and peaceful trails.
I highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to experience the Himalayas in a short time.
