Route Plan

Itinerary

Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel. Take time to rest after your journey and prepare for the adventure ahead. If time allows, you can explore the surrounding streets of Kathmandu.

50-minute flight to Tumlingtar, followed by a 3–4-hour drive to Num Village. Enjoy a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar with beautiful Himalayan views along the way. From Tumlingtar, continue by road through the scenic Arun Valley toward Num Village, the starting point of the Makalu Base Camp Trek.

Begin trekking from Num, descending toward the Arun River before climbing through forests and terraced hillsides. Continue through traditional settlements to reach Seduwa, a peaceful mountain village.

Walk through lush forests and cultivated hills toward Tashi Gaon, one of the last major villages before entering the higher Makalu wilderness. Enjoy the traditional atmosphere and mountain surroundings.

The trail becomes steeper as you leave the lower villages behind. Climb through rhododendron forests and alpine landscapes toward Khangma Danda, where the mountain scenery begins to feel much more dramatic.

Take a well-deserved rest day to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. Enjoy a short hike around the area, explore the surrounding landscape, and take in the changing Himalayan scenery.

Continue through beautiful rhododendron and pine forests, crossing several ridges and enjoying increasingly impressive mountain views. The trail gradually leads into the more remote high-altitude landscape before reaching Dobate.

Descend gradually through the forest toward the Barun River valley. The scenery becomes wilder and more dramatic as you enter the Makalu-Barun wilderness and continue toward Yangri Kharka.

Follow the Barun Valley deeper into the mountains. As the vegetation becomes thinner, spectacular peaks and rocky landscapes dominate the surroundings. Reach Langmale Kharka and prepare for the final approach to base camp.

Today is one of the most memorable days of the trek. Walk through the rugged upper Barun Valley toward Makalu Base Camp, surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. Reaching 4,830 meters beneath Mount Makalu is a truly rewarding achievement.

Spend the day exploring the magnificent surroundings of Makalu Base Camp. Enjoy views of Mount Makalu, Baruntse, Chamlang, and the surrounding glaciers and valleys. Take photographs, explore nearby viewpoints, and allow yourself time to appreciate the wilderness.

Begin the return journey through the Barun Valley. Retrace the trail through the dramatic mountain landscape and gradually descend toward the warmer surroundings of Yangri Kharka.

Continue through the remote wilderness, following the familiar trail back toward Dobate. The gradual change in vegetation and landscape makes the return journey feel surprisingly different.

Walk back through rhododendron and pine forests toward Khangma Danda. Enjoy the quieter lower-altitude environment and take time to appreciate the landscapes you passed earlier in the trek.

Continue the long descent toward Seduwa. The warmer temperatures, greener forests, and return of terraced farmland signal your gradual transition from the high Himalayas toward the Arun Valley.

Complete the final section of the trek and return to Num. From here, take a scenic drive toward Khandbari, enjoying the changing landscape as you descend into the lower hills.

Start early with a drive to Tumlingtar Airport. Take the flight back to Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel. The afternoon is free to relax, explore, or simply enjoy a comfortable evening after the trek.

Enjoy a cultural day exploring some of Kathmandu’s historic landmarks, temples, and heritage sites. It is a chance to experience a very different side of Nepal after the remote wilderness of Makalu.

Your Makalu Base Camp adventure comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, transfer to the airport for your onward journey, taking home memories of remote trails, mountain villages, spectacular landscapes, and the mighty Makalu.

The Experience

What the route feels like

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a journey for trekkers who want to experience the Himalayas beyond the well-known trails. Far from the busy routes of Everest and Annapurna, the Makalu region offers a rare combination of wilderness, dramatic mountain scenery, remote villages, and authentic Himalayan culture. The trail leads deep into Makalu-Barun National Park, where the landscape gradually changes from green hills and dense forests to rugged alpine valleys beneath the towering presence of Mount Makalu, the world’s fifth-highest mountain.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Makalu Base Camp Trek is the incredible variety of landscapes along the way. The journey begins among terraced hills and traditional villages before entering forests filled with rhododendron, bamboo, pine, and other Himalayan vegetation. Higher up, the forests gradually give way to alpine meadows, rocky valleys, glaciers, and dramatic mountain passes. Every stage of the trek brings a different landscape, making the journey feel like a continuous discovery.

Deep inside Makalu-Barun National Park, the trail offers a rare sense of wilderness and solitude. Rivers flow through deep valleys, waterfalls appear between the forests, and the surrounding mountains become increasingly dramatic as you climb higher. The region is also known for its rich biodiversity, making the trek particularly special for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone who enjoys walking through pristine mountain environments.

The ultimate goal is Makalu Base Camp, beneath the impressive 8,485-meter Mount Makalu. Reaching the base camp is a rewarding moment, but the experience is about much more than standing at the destination. Along the way, magnificent views of Makalu, Chamlang, Baruntse, Everest, and Lhotse gradually reveal themselves, creating unforgettable moments throughout the journey.

The trek is also a cultural experience. The trail passes through remote Himalayan communities where traditional ways of life remain closely connected to the mountains, forests, and seasons. Staying in local lodges, meeting villagers, experiencing Buddhist traditions, and sharing simple moments with local families give the journey a genuine sense of connection. Often, these encounters become just as memorable as the spectacular mountain views.

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a challenging adventure. Long walking days, steep ascents, remote trails, changing weather, and high-altitude terrain require good preparation and a steady pace. But this challenge is also part of its beauty. The mountains teach patience, you cannot rush altitude or weather. With proper acclimatization, preparation, and experienced guidance, every difficult section becomes another achievement to remember.

For trekkers searching for remote trekking in Nepal, untouched Himalayan scenery, authentic culture, and a true wilderness experience, Makalu Base Camp offers something remarkably different. The journey takes you away from the crowds and deep into a landscape where nature feels powerful, quiet, and untouched. Makalu is not simply a trek to a base camp; it is a journey into the heart of Nepal’s wild Himalayas, where every step brings a new landscape, a new story, and a deeper connection with the mountains.
