After checking into your hotel in Thimphu, you’ll have some leisure time before starting your sightseeing. Visit the iconic National Memorial Chorten, one of Thimphu’s most beloved landmarks. Later, explore the Authentic Bhutanese Crafts Bazaar, the perfect place to admire and shop for local handicrafts and souvenirs to remember your Bhutan journey.
If time permits, conclude your day at Clock Tower Square, located in the heart of Thimphu city. It’s a lively gathering spot surrounded by restaurants, shops, and cafés, an ideal place to soak in the local atmosphere before heading back to your hotel for the night.

After breakfast, begin your day with a visit to the magnificent Buddha Dordenma, one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. Located atop Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, this 169-foot golden statue houses an incredible 125,000 miniature Buddhas inside, ranging from 8 to 12 inches in height. Aside from its spiritual significance, the site offers spectacular panoramic views over the Thimphu Valley, making it a favorite spot for both locals and visitors.
Next, proceed to the Takin Preserve Centre, home to Bhutan’s national animal — the Takin. This unique, goat-antelope-like animal can be seen in its natural enclosure at Motithang, just a short 15-minute drive from Thimphu town. The preserve also shelters other wildlife such as Muntjac deer, Sambar, and Serow, providing a brief yet fascinating glimpse into Bhutan’s diverse fauna.
After a leisurely lunch, embark on your journey to Punakha, a region steeped in Bhutanese history and natural beauty. En route, stop at the scenic Dochula Pass, located at an elevation of 3,100 meters. On clear days, enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree view of the snowcapped Himalayan mountain range, framed by the tranquil presence of 108 memorial chortens (stupas). Sip a warm cup of coffee at the local café while soaking in the peaceful ambiance.
Continue your drive and visit Chimi Lhakhang, famously known as The Fertility Temple. This sacred monastery, dedicated to the Divine Madman, Lama Drukpa Kunley, is believed to bless childless couples with fertility. The short and easy hike to the temple takes you through the picturesque Mesina village, offering beautiful views of rice paddies and traditional farmhouses.
Upon reaching Punakha, explore the majestic Punakha Dzong, often referred to as the “Palace of Great Happiness.” Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers, it is Bhutan’s second-oldest and second-largest dzong, known for its stunning architecture and rich historical significance.
