We recently completed an incredible 12-day Everest Base Camp Winter Trek with an energetic and enthusiastic young group from England (Team British Army). The journey was smooth, free of major challenges, and truly unforgettable. The weather was absolutely stunning, with bright blue skies on most days. A few instances of snowfall only enhanced the experience, transforming the trails into pristine white paths surrounded by breathtaking snow-capped peaks.
Why Our Winter Everest Trek Was Special
One of the most unique aspects of trekking in winter is the tranquility. At times, it felt like we had the entire trail to ourselves, making the journey even more special. We encountered only a few other trekking groups, including teams from Greenland and Australia. The usual caravans of donkeys and yaks were absent, which meant dust-free trails and a peaceful atmosphere. Most of the time, we had the lodges entirely to ourselves, adding to the exclusivity and comfort of our trip.
How Cold Was It During the Trek?
Winter trekking in the Himalayas comes with its challenges, and the cold is certainly one of them. Temperatures occasionally dropped as low as -22°C at Gorakshep, with -15°C being quite common at night. However, daytime temperatures ranged between 4°C and 5°C, and some days were warm enough to trek in just t-shirts. This balance of cold nights and comfortable daytime trekking made the experience both challenging and rewarding.
Are Lodges Open During Winter?
Yes, many lodges remain open even in winter, though around two-thirds close due to the lower number of trekkers. Despite this, we had no trouble finding comfortable accommodations and warm meals throughout our trek. The lodges that remained open provided excellent hospitality, ensuring a cozy and enjoyable experience.
Winter Flights to Lukla
Flights to Lukla operate differently in winter compared to peak trekking seasons. While fewer flights are available, the major advantage is that they often fly directly from Kathmandu. This eliminates the need for a long drive to Manthali Airport, which is required in peak seasons. The direct flights made our journey more convenient and efficient.
The Stunning Mountain Views
Winter in the Himalayas offers some of the clearest and most breathtaking mountain views. For travel photography enthusiasts, especially those passionate about landscapes, this season is ideal. The crisp blue skies and snow-draped peaks create stunning photographic opportunities. If you appreciate serene beauty and vivid scenery, a winter Everest Base Camp trek is an excellent choice.
Our winter Everest Base Camp trek was a remarkable adventure filled with tranquility, stunning views, and unforgettable moments. Despite the cold, every step was worth it. If you’re considering a winter trek in the Himalayas, go for it! With proper preparation and a reliable team, your journey can be just as extraordinary.
